The sand dollar is an incredibly ancient creature dating back about 60 million years. Still found in nature today, they have held deep meaning for many peoples around the world.
Finding the skeleton of a sand dollar in nature is believed to bring luck and prosperity. In maritime folklore, they have also been known as “mermaid money” and linked to Atlantis.
In other folkloric traditions, the sand dollar carries the power and the symbolism of transformation and resilience through cycles of change. The five-fold pattern interpreted as a star, representing harmony or cosmic balance.
I created this piece to look like a fossilised form, and I wanted it to feel like something that has been found and uncovered. It is purposely made to look as if it was plucked from the sea after being hidden away from the world since ancient times.

The Details:
❖ Solid recycled eco sterling silver (.925)
❖ Hand-carved using the ancient lost-wax method
❖ Pendant diameter approx. 21 mm (height approx. 30 mm including bail)
❖ Naturally textured to echo weathered sand dollars / fossil forms
The Making:
I sculpted this piece using the lost wax method, before it was cast in silver. This is an ancient process, thousands of years old. The aesthetic evokes the feeling of a discovered treasure.*Material: Recycled eco sterling silver .925
